The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved a new drug for erectile dysfunction, the first to do so. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition that affects approximately 4 million men in the United States, according to the FDA.
In a clinical trial, patients taking sildenafil, the generic version of Viagra, showed a faster-growing and more pronounced effect compared to patients taking the brand-name drug. “In fact, the most common side effects associated with sildenafil include headache, flushing, back pain, and nasal congestion. These side effects are generally mild and subside as the body adjusts to the medication,” said Cunha.

“There are no good treatments for ED, and we are committed to advancing treatment options that include medications like Viagra and Cialis,” said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, director of urology at San Diego Sexual Medicine. “Erectile dysfunction is treatable with medications like Viagra or Cialis, but there are other treatment options available. These include counseling and other therapies, including psychotherapy and relationship counseling.”
For the first time, the FDA approved sildenafil for the treatment of ED in 2006.
